Motion System Adjustment

Straighten X crossbar and Y rail parallelism on Vision Miner 22 IDEX using mesh maps, mechanical shimming, and controlled re-torque.

If the first layer varies across large prints especially different Z on the left vs. right run auto-calibration / mesh correction first. If the mesh still shows bow along X or corner twist that looks like Y rail parallelism, use this guide: capture a cold mesh on glass, read the Height Map, then adjust the crossbar and Y rails in a controlled order.

Before you begin safety and risk

Read the Safety Before You Begin article to understand the hazards involved in working on the Vision Miner 22IDEX V4 including electrical, thermal, mechanical, and chemical risks. This procedure uses Z moves and mechanical deflection of the frame. All procedures in this wiki are provided as recommendations only. By choosing to follow any procedure, you do so at your own risk.

Pinch and tip hazards while deflecting the crossbar

Do not trap fingers between the crossbar, plate, and tools. If you use the screwdriver on the bed method, move Z slowly and keep hands clear.

Tools and Materials

  • Brand-new (or perfectly clean) glass build plate
  • 2.5 mm Hex screwdriver (hex wrench)
  • 5.5 mm wrench (for nuts under the linear rail, if used on your build)
  • Microfiber cloth (or other lint-free cleaning cloth)
  • Shims for Y-rail corners if needed request through support
  • Height Map plugin enabled (see Visualizing the Mesh)

Run the test

  1. Stabilize temperature work at stable ambient temperature; bed cold for this procedure.
  2. Prepare the build plate clean the aluminum plate, lay a clean glass plate on top, and do not thumbscrew it tight (clamping can distort the stack).
  3. Run mesh compensation in the web interface Dashboard, Home All, then Compensation & Calibration > Run Mesh Compensation (G29) (or send G29).

Visualizing the mesh

  1. Plugins enable the Height Map plugin.
  2. Height Map tab open the last mesh; enable Invert Z coordinates so high/low reads match how you think about crossbar bow.

Analyzing the mesh

  1. Keep Invert Z coordinates on.
  2. X straightness along X, the trace should be straight (tilt is OK; bow is not).
  3. Y parallelism compare front vs. back rail corners; skewed corners often mean Y rails are not parallel.

If X shows bow, continue to Adjusting the X-axis straightness. If X is straight, jump to Adjusting the Y-axis parallelity.

Adjusting the X-axis straightness

Goal: remove concave / convex bow along X by re-seating the linear rail on the crossbar while the gantry Y attachments are slightly loose.

  1. Read the mesh decide if the centre needs up or down deflection.
  2. Loosen linear rail ? crossbar about one full turn per screw so the rail can slide; use 2.5 mm hex on screws and 5.5 mm wrench on nuts if your hardware uses captured nuts.
  3. Loosen Y-rail ? top gantry screws (front and back pairs) about 1 turn so the crossbar can move.
  4. Deflect the crossbar overshoot slightly vs. the measured bow (example: ~1 mm bow may need a few mm deflection while tightening).

motion mesh crossbar deflection assist
  1. Tighten rail ? crossbar from centre outward, alternating sides so the rail does not walk.
  2. Re-tighten Y-rail ? gantry tighten back pair with gantry toward the rear, then front pair with gantry forward; respect any locator hole first if your frame uses one.
  3. Re-probeHome All, G29, re-open Height Map and confirm X is straight; repeat if needed.

Adjusting the Y-axis parallelity

Use this after X is acceptable.

  1. Home All and run G29 again.
  2. Inspect left/right corners with invert-Z still on.
  3. Shim between top gantry and Y-rail spacers if one corner is consistently high vs. the opposite corner on the same side.

Shim thickness

Start with thin shims and re-probe after each small change. Large jumps can over-correct.

  1. Re-tighten Y-rail screws evenly; slide the bed full front/back to feel for binding.
  2. Home All, G29, confirm the mesh improved.
